Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Disability Extension (SGLI-DE) SGLI-DE to VGLI Insurance Conversion Key Timeframes. Date of military separation or discharge. Veteran will receive free life insurance coverage up to 2 years. • Veterans are eligible for SGLI-DE if they are totally disabled at time of discharge. • Can apply for SGLI-DE at any time within 2 years of separation. • Will have 2 years of free coverage from date of separation (not date of application). At 20 months Veteran will receive letter explaining need to pay first VGLI premium by 24th month. At 22 months Veteran will receive first bill for VGLI premium. SGLI-DE ends at 2 years. Conversion to VGLI with no Health Requirements from 22 months to 2 years after date of military separation or discharge. Conversion to VGLI with Health Requirements between 2 to 3 Years after date of military separation or discharge. 2 Years after date of military separation or discharge, VGLI starts if first premium is paid.
