The Louisville RO is one of VA’s Integrated Disability Examination System (IDES) sites. This
joint program with the Department of Defense (DOD) aims to improve the disability rating process by creating a single disability exam conducted to VA standards and used by both VA and DOD, developing a single disability rating completed by VA that is binding on both departments, and paying VA benefits within 30 days of a Servicemember’s separation from service. In September 2011, the Louisville RO began IDES operations at Fort Knox, Ky., where three full-time-equivalent employees are stationed.
The Louisville RO is also reviewing claims and appeals related to potential exposure to contaminated water at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. This includes claims currently under appeal with the Appeals Management Center, Pension Management Centers, and Appeals Resource Centers. (Note, however, that all Camp Lejeune-related claims associated with paperless claims folders remain at the Winston-Salem and Salt Lake City ROs.)
The Louisville RO includes one of VA’s six Fiduciary Hubs. The fiduciary program provides oversight of VA’s most vulnerable beneficiaries who are unable to manage their VA benefits because of injury, disease, and the infirmities of advanced age or because they are under 18 years of age. VA appoints fiduciaries who manage VA benefits for these beneficiaries and conducts oversight of VA-appointed fiduciaries to ensure that they are meeting the needs of the beneficiaries they serve. The Louisville Fiduciary Hub serves fiduciaries in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia.
