How much will SGLI premiums be discounted?The SGLI premium discount lowers the rate from 6 cents per $1,000 of coverage to 5 cents per $1,000 of coverage. Therefore, the new premium for the maximum amount of SGLI coverage of $500,000 will be $25.00 per month, plus $1.00 for Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI) coverage.
How much will FSGLI premiums be discounted?The FSGLI premium discount will occur across all age brackets, ranging from 11% to 22%, with the average premium discount at approximately 13%.
Where can I view the new discounted premiums?You can view the SGLI/FSGLI rate charts online.
When will the premium discount become effective?The premium discount for SGLI and FSGLI will become effective July 1, 2025.
Is the premium discount automatic?Yes, the premium for SGLI and FSGLI will automatically be updated in your records and the lower payment deducted from your service pay.
Who is affected by this discount?All active duty, Reserve, and National Guard Service members with active SGLI coverage will automatically receive the premium discount.
All Service members with active FSGLI coverage will automatically receive the premium discount.
Will this premium discount have any impact on coverage for dependent children?No, dependent children of Service members covered under SGLI are automatically covered for $10,000 at no charge.
Will this new premium discount impact SGLI Traumatic Injury protection (TSGLI)?No, TSGLI coverage will remain at $1.00 for all Service members covered under SGLI.
How will Service members be notified about the SGLI and FSGLI premium discount?Service members will be notified of their new lower premium in direct messaging from their Uniformed Service. The lower premium will also be reflected on their Leave and Earning Statement (LES) and pay system messaging as well as in the SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES).
VA will also announce the premium discounts with a Press Release, social media posts, and web page updates.
Who can individuals contact for more information?Service members with payroll deduction questions, after premium discount, can contact the Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS) at 1-888-332-7411, or can speak with their Uniformed Service Human Resource Finance Personnel.
