Why are the premiums for Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) being discounted?

Due to the sound financial standing of the VGLI program.

How much will VGLI premiums be discounted?

The VGLI premium discount will occur across all age brackets, ranging from 2% to 17%, with the average premium discount at approximately 11%.

Where can I view the new discounted premiums?

You can view the VGLI rate chart online.

When will the premium discount become effective?

The premium discount for VGLI will become effective July 1, 2025.

Is the premium discount automatic?

Yes, the premium for your coverage amount will automatically be updated in your insurance record, however, depending on selected payment method, action may be required to adjust your payment amount.

  • If your premiums are paid by deduction from VA compensation, no action is needed.
  • If your premiums are paid by direct billing, your bill will reflect the updated premium and you will need to send payment for the new amount.
  • If your premiums are paid by EFT from your checking or savings account, no action is needed.
  • If your premiums are paid by Automatic Bill Payment established through your financial institution, you will need to update the payment amount – after the effective date of the premium discount – to reflect the lower premium.
  • If your premiums are paid by credit card, you will need to issue payment under the new amount.
  • If you have already paid beyond when the new rates take effect, you will have a credit on your account resulting from the reduction in premium rates.
Who is affected by this discount?

All active VGLI insureds will automatically receive the premium discount. - All Veterans who are approved for VGLI after the effective date will receive the lower premium rate.

How will Veterans be notified about the VGLI premium discount?
  • Veterans will be notified of their new lower premium through direct mail, email, online accounts, and premium bills from the Office of Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (OSGLI).
  • VA will also announce the premium discounts with a Press Release, social media posts, and web page updates.

  • Separating Service members with questions on converting their SGLI coverage to VGLI coverage should contact OSGLI at 1-800-419-1473.
  • VGLI members with questions on premium information, or purchasing additional VGLI through the VGLI Buy-up, should contact OSGLI at 1-800-419-1473, or by email at osgli.osgli@prudential.com.
