More About the Roanoke Regional Office

Compensation Services

The Veterans Service Center administers the Compensation program for Veterans and their dependents in Virginia and the District of Columbia. In addition, the division is responsible for determining eligibility for certain benefits and services provided by Insurance, Veteran Readiness and Employment, Loan Guaranty, the Veterans Health Administration, and the National Cemetery Administration

Operating VA’s Home Loan Guaranty Program for Veterans

The VA Home Loan Program helps Veterans obtain mortgage loans from private lenders by guaranteeing a portion of the loan against loss. VA also provides services through the Home Loan Program to help Veterans avoid losing their homes in the event of temporary financial difficulties. The Roanoke Regional Office serves as the Regional Loan Center (RLC) responsible for loan processing, loan administration, Construction and Valuation, and Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) functions for all Veterans in the area of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. The Loan Administration Section services VA guaranteed home loans for all states with the exception of Hawaii. The Loan Production section processes cases for the entire country.

Working with the U.S. Department of Defense on Integrated Disability Evaluation System

Roanoke RO is actively engaged in the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES), a joint program with the Department of Defense (DOD) to improve the disability rating process. The program aims to create a single disability exam conducted to VA standards and used by both VA and DOD, develop a single disability rating completed by VA that is binding on both departments, and provide payments of VA benefits within 30 days of a Servicemember’s separation from service. Roanoke has four operational sites—Fort Eustis, Fort Lee, Langley Air Force Base, and Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.

Veteran Readiness and Employment Working with VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC)

As part of the VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC) program, the Roanoke RO supports 8 VSOC sites to include: the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake campuses of Tidewater Community College, Norfolk State University, ECPI - Virginia Beach, Liberty University – Lynchburg, and Old Dominion University. These counselors at these schools provide services to all Veterans pursuing education on these campuses. Services can include help with coordinating benefits through the Veterans Benefits Administration, the VAMC, the Vet Centers, and Student Veteran organizations.

Reaching Transitioning Servicemembers and Veterans Who Are Homeless

Roanoke RO is proactively reaching transitioning Servicemembers through our Transition Assistance and Disability Transition Assistance Program briefings in the Tidewater area of Virginia. On average, employees conduct 24 VA benefit briefings each month. Our full-time Homeless Veteran Outreach Coordinator also continues to work closely with Veterans who are homeless, Veterans Health Administration employees, and with shelters to provide services that lead to housing permanency.
