Life Insurance
Apply for Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI)
Remember that your SGLI coverage expires 120 days after separation from service. VGLI provides renewable group term insurance of up to $500,000. The initial amount of VGLI you can get is equal to the amount of SGLI you have when you separate from service, so it is important that you do not cancel your SGLI coverage before you separate from service.
Even if you don’t plan to keep it, VGLI is great transition insurance to take while you shop for another policy to ensure you don’t have a gap in coverage when your SGLI expires.

You can apply within 240 days after separating from the military without answering any health questions or between 121 days and 1 year and 120 days after separation with proof of health.
This may be the best option for you if:
- You are nearing the date your SGLI coverage will expire (120 days after separation), or your SGLI has already expired and you have not had time to shop for another life insurance policy.
- You are in poor health or have conditions that may make it difficult for you to obtain an individual policy with a private insurer. You can get VGLI within 240 days of separation from service without having to answer any health questions.
