The San Diego RO has seven Pre-Discharge Centers that conduct Benefits Delivery at Discharge, which is designed to rapidly connect transitioning Servicemembers with VA benefits and services. In addition to providing benefits counseling and application assistance, RO staff work closely with the Marine Corps, the Naval hospital, and the VA medical center on single separation examinations, wherein the Veteran needs only one exam on release from active duty.
Pre-Discharge Claims
If you have a service-connected condition, you can file a claim for disability benefits 180 to 90 days before you leave the military. This may help speed up the claim decision process so you can get your benefits sooner. Find out how to file a claim through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program. And learn what to do if you have less than 90 days left on active duty. Click here for more information on BDD claims.
San Diego is home to the largest military complex in the United States, and so the San Diego RO has a robust, seamless transition program. Strong partnerships are in place with all the military commands, Department of Defense, Department of Labor, and California State and county officials to make sure that VA participates in as many military briefings as possible.
Our Veteran Readiness and Employment VetSuccess on Campus location is San Diego State University, where we provide benefits, outreach, guidance, and assistance to student Veterans, active duty Servicemembers, and dependents. We offer support in applying for VA benefits, referrals to community resources, vocational and career counseling, and employment transition and related resources. Our VetSuccess counselor also regularly attends outreach events throughout the year, reaching student Veterans, service providers, government entities, employers, and military personnel.
