Recognizing that some Veterans may be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic either financially or by the inability to see their doctor to obtain medical records to establish eligibility, VA Insurance Service is extending the period for former members to apply for Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) for any applications received from June 11, 2020 through December 11, 2021. The time period to apply for VGLI without having to answer health questions is being increased by 90 days from 240 days to 330 days following separation from service, and the time period to apply for VGLI with proof of good health is extended by 90 days from 1 year and 120 days to 1 year and 210 days following separation from service.
Extending the VGLI application deadlines will help to ensure that more recently separated Service members have the opportunity to continue the life insurance coverage they carried while on active duty. Contact the Office of Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (OSGLI) at 1-800-419-1473 if you have questions about Veterans' Group Life Insurance.
